When plans were being made to bring the first Junior Miss contestants to Mobile, the program's organizers realized they could not afford hotel rooms for them. They came up with the idea of asking local families to house the contestants. Mobilians responded readily with open hearts. The program has continued this tradition because the contestants and the host families themselves love the experience! Many contestants develop lifelong relationships with their "new" family and "home away from home."
